Newburyport Youth Services (NYS) is partnering with RAMP Education, a local educational consultancy specializing in college readiness and the college process, on an opportunity for college and high school youth to propose and conduct stipended summer projects under the mentorship of community members.

NYS’s mission is based on building opportunities for youth to thrive. During this time, we have seen youth struggle with missing the connections and sense of community afforded by in person schooling. This partnership project, Make-Do 2020!, aims to give youth 13-24 residing in Newburyport, Amesbury, Newbury, Rowley, Salisbury or Georgetown, an opportunity to conduct work over the summer that gives them a sense of purpose while offering something of value to the wider community. Youth are encouraged to think broadly about project ideas, including the development of virtual workshops, research projects, community enhancements, community service, political engagement work, and creative arts projects.

ADULTS! How you can get involved:

  1. Become a Community Coach
    1. If you have a project you would like a young person to work with you on over the summer, submit a Community Coach Form. The project can be as independent or as collaborative as you would like and should have the desired outcome of bettering the community.
    2. If you personally are in need of services, someone to run errands, would like a young person to help around the yard, etc. you can also submit a Community Coach Form. By providing a young person with an opportunity to volunteer, to be responsible and to build a relationship with a community member you are helping those youth thrive.
  2. Propose a project
    1. Do you have an idea for a project that would help better our communities, but don’t have all the details thought through yet? Let us know. We can find a young person to lead the project and connect them with the correct community organizations.
  3. Donate
    1. Make a DONATION online! Half of the funds to support the Make-Do 2020! projects will come through the ECAB Network, Peter and Elizabeth Tower Foundation grant, which has made funds available to help communities cope with COVID related needs. These funds will be matched by tax deductible contributions from you, the Newburyport community, made to the Friends of NYS. The more contributions made to NYS between July 1 and July 17, the greater number of projects can be funded.
    2. Any checks written to Friends of Newburyport Youth Services between June 29- July 17th will be allocated toward this project. These contributions are tax-deductible. Checks can be dropped off or mailed to Friends of NYS at 40 Milk St., Newburyport, MA 01950

About Us The Essex County Asset Builder (ECAB) Network creates regional connections and supports for individuals, families and organizations from Amesbury, Georgetown, Newbury, Rowley, Salisbury and Newburyport, in using a positive youth development approach to help youth thrive. Positive Youth Development Being a part of the ECAB Network brings local and regional opportunities.  Locally, communities have access to trainings, data, and best practices, and receive guidance on implementation and outreach strategies that build positive youth development possibilities.  Communities also get the benefit of regionalizing efforts, where networking, combining resources, current policies, and a shared vision strengthen the towns and cities as well as the region. History Recently, the communities of Amesbury, Georgetown, Newbury, Rowley, Salisbury and Newburyport came together to form the Essex County Asset Builder Network.  Funded by a three year grant, the goal of this Network is to create a common language of asset- based youth development (creating protective factors). It has been shown that youth who have more assets are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.  This grant will use the 40 Developmental Assets framework to build these protective factors and reduce risk behaviors by focusing on both the youth and the environment that shapes them. The community partnership will enhance the great work already being done to support youth and families, as well as expand community supports, opportunities, and resources. Additionally, the grant will collect and disseminate regional data, coordinate shared resources and bring educational opportunities for various sectors of the community. Goal To spread the philosophy and practice of the positive youth development approach through implementation of 40 Developmental Asset framework within communities across the region. We will accomplish this goal by: Mission To use a positive youth development approach to build networks within each community and across the region that help decrease risk behaviors in youth and produce a healthier community. Vision A network of communities that welcome, value and empower youth through meaningful opportunities and collaborative efforts to support and strengthen youth assets and increase healthy decision making.
